I leaned back, staring deep into his green eyes. The tears kept streaming down my face, but the panic started to fade. I felt calmer somehow, safer. And before I could stop myself, the words started to pour out of my mouth.

I told Alec everything. How much I hated LA, how much I wanted my small-town life back. How sorry I was for having lied to my family, why I couldn’t tell them the truth now. How much it hurt to be around him, but how much better I felt since we’d met at his hotel…

We lost track of time, locked inside that room. And though we didn’t solve any of my problems, I felt like they had all shrunk somehow. They seemed smaller, simpler—almost as if they weren’t problems anymore.

In the end, I decided to stay in LA. But Alec promised he would do whatever he could to help me enjoy life on his side of the country. He was very proud of being Californian, actually. I didn’t know that about him.

I didn’t know a lot of things about him. Which surprised me, really. But it also made me want to find out, to keep digging. I wanted to get to know him. The real him.

“This is pretty good.” I raised my eyebrows, taking my last bite of Sue’s vegan sandwich.

“Told ya.” Alec shrugged with a smug smile.

I still didn’t think a sandwich without meat and cheese could be called a sandwich—but I had to admit, it did taste good. “But keep telling me the story! I can’t believe you and Ben actually convinced the guy that the house was haunted.”

“It’s true!” Alec laughed out loud. “Matt told us he even peed himself a little!”

I shook my head, laughing with him. “You should be ashamed of yourselves.”

“It was a kids’ prank! We…” He paused, his eyes focused on my cheek. “You have corn in your hair, let me…”

I shivered as his hand got nearer and nearer. “It’s okay, I’ve got it.”

Alec watched me find the corn kernel, an amused grin on his face.

“Is there more?” I asked, pulling strands over my shoulder.

“No.” His dimples showed. “I just think we have another problem to solve.”

“What now?” I sighed.

“Well… Sorry to say, but…you tense up every time I try to touch you, Linda. You make me feel like I’m about to give you an electric shock or something.”

I let out a laugh. He was so right! It wasn’t my intention to make him feel that way, but that was exactly what happened in me every time he touched my skin.

“And since I’m your only friend in LA—and you do intend to keep hanging out with me, right?” He waited.

“Right.” I half-smiled.

“So, yeah. I think we should do something about it.”

“I’m sorry.” I frowned. “I’m hoping to get used to you eventually. I just need some time.”

“Maybe you don’t…” he said, lost in thought. “You told me you have to control yourself when you are with me, right? And I get it—I know this touching thing is a big deal for you.
