The agents parked Jim in a holding cell in the FBI building. After a couple hours, the agent named Tim entered and brought him to a blank office. It contained a table and chairs but did not include full-blown interrogation features, such as an observation mirror or video cameras. After a minute, Slane entered and Tim left, shutting the door behind him.

“We added the obstruction charge because you haven’t told us everything you know,” Slane said.

“Where’s my lawyer?”

“We’re working on it,” Slane said. “You know, this hacker is killing people. And trying to kill you. It seems like you could be cooperative.”

“I was cooperative before you arrested me. Now I have to look out for myself.”

“You told us VAIe was at Notre Dame. He wasn’t.”

“I imagine VAIe knew we were coming and left.”

Slane shifted gears. “What did you guys find up at American?”

“Didn’t Jerry tell you? He called you, right?”

“We got cut off.”

“Oh yeah, right. By a Tomahawk missile. That killed him.”

Slane drummed his fingers on the table. “We can and will hold you until this is over. Tell me how to find VAIe. Who is he?”

Jim remained silent.

Slane stood. “Suit yourself. If you decide to cooperate, tell Tim.”

Tim and Director Fletcher entered the office.

Slane looked surprised. “Morning, Dave. We’ve reacquired our hacker,” he said, tilting his head toward Jim. “Unfortunately, he’s not cooperating.”

“Why are you questioning him in here instead of an interrogation room?” Fletcher said.

“Without the lawyer I requested,” Jim added.

Fletcher held up a finger toward Jim without looking at him.

Slane shrugged. “Odds were high he wouldn’t talk. If he did, we’d make it official.”

Fletcher nodded. “So you were just going through the motions. Plus, we know he didn’t hack us, so what’s the point of official questioning, right?”

Slane frowned.

“Plus,” Fletcher said, “if Mr. Ericssen did reveal something, maybe it’d be best if only you heard it?”

“I don’t understand, sir,” Slane said.

Fletcher looked down at some papers in his hand. “It appears your cell phone has recently exchanged texts with IPs associated with Notre Dame,” he said. “Is that right?”

Slane didn’t answer.

“Several deleted emails archived on our servers show discussion between you and someone calling themself VAIe,” Fletcher continued. “And your bank account shows three unexplained deposits of nine thousand dollars each in the past year.”

Slane sagged like a deflating balloon.

“Help me understand, Bob,” Fletcher said.

Slane shook his head. “VAIe had me, Dave. If I just coulda caught him at Notre Dame.”

“Why me?” Jim said.

“You were right, VAIe has a hard-on for you,” Slane said. “He wants you locked up, out of the picture. I didn’t have a choice.”

“We always have a choice, Bob,” Fletcher said. “You’re under arrest for, well, a list of things. Tim, please take Bob into custody.”

Slane’s aide cuffed him and led him from the room. Fletcher produced a handcuff key and uncuffed Jim.

“So Slane is dirty,” Jim said. “I didn’t see that coming.”

Fletcher nodded and was about to speak when they heard a commotion in the hallway outside the office. Both men stepped
