“Thanks for going through all this trouble giving us such a nice homecoming and all,” Robby said leaning back on the couch.

“I can’t really take credit for that. Andi is the one who planned the dinner. I was gonna slap you two on the back and drag you around the neighborhood so you can pick which house of the lot we went in on you’d like to have. Andi said you’d want some home cooking first and she was right.”

Day nodded. “She’s not at all the kind of woman I pictured you with, but I was wrong because she fits with you better than any woman I could have dreamed up.”

“Yeah, why didn’t you tell us you were settling down?” Robby asked.

“Settling down? No, it’s not like that between me and Andi. We’re not living together. It’s complicated to describe but we have a sort of understanding,” I said hoping that Robby and Day would leave it at that.

“Really man?” Robby asked, which surprised me because I thought for sure it would be Day who would jump all over my statement first. “Do you think a fine woman like that is going to stick around for you when you can’t commit? That’s just plain idiocy.”

Day shrugged. “Hell, if she’s free I have a brother who just got out of a rocky divorce who’s looking for a good woman.”

Go to hell, Day.

“When this thing between she and I fizzle out I’ll let you know so you can call that brother of yours.”

Robby scowled at Day who we both knew was trying to rile me. “Her kid is a good one too. He looks up to you already so I hope you aren’t fixing to cut ties completely when you scare yourself into calling it quits.”

“Scare myself? No Robby, I don’t scare myself. I just rub people the wrong way and eventually they are finished putting up with me. I don’t blame them for that.”

“Bullshit. You get scared and do something asinine to drive them away.”

I didn’t want to argue with my good friends. It’d been too long since I’d seen them last and I knew we’d have plenty of time to argue. “Fine, have it your way. Either way, it always ends.”

“So, what happens then? You gonna kick her out of this duplex?”

I shook my head. “We’re friends too. We’ll just go back to being friends.”

“Friends? You’re like a lion in heat around Andi, how are you gonna just be friends when she brings some other guy home? I know you and you are not the sharing a woman sort of man.”

He had a point but that was nothing I could help so I laughed it off. “Well, we’ve all changed over the years. You’ve got to admit that. However, one thing has remained the same about me. One thing has remained the same and that is the fact that I’m not cut out for the life of husband and father. Now, stop trying to fix my life and let’s talk about yours.
