Fian

With a great groan, Fian picked up the box and carried it to the bridge, placing it on the floor and opening it. There were still tons of things to be unpacked from the hold; when they'd escaped Pliaria XII, they'd packed as much as they could, knowing that it was possible they wouldn't be able to ever come back.

Fian was getting soft, he could tell. He hadn't had much opportunity to build his muscles, and his fitness was suffering for it. It didn't help that running while in his four-legged form did nothing for his muscles in his two-legged form. He had to work on both sets of muscles separately. It was one of the downsides of being a shifter.

But he wouldn't trade it for anything. He was itching under his skin, his animal wanting to climb out and explore the forest again. As soon as he finished going through this box, he promised himself.

Before he could take anything out, though, the ship started pinging. Fian growled with irritation. He'd done a good job of preventing himself from constantly searching the screen for threats, especially now that he had his feelings for Ellis to distract him. But every so often, the ship would send him an alert. The beeping sounds were insistent and grating to his ears when he just wanted a quiet moment to do work.

He got up reluctantly and walked to the bridge's "dashboard," as Ellis would call it, to see where the alert was coming from. It looked like the ship had identified something in the pack's airspace. He observed the moving, glowing dot for a while. Ellis and David had both assured him that there were many planes from the military base nearby, so it was entirely possible that it was innocuous. But after he and Zax had been discovered by the spy Jangar, Fian had become paranoid that the Conquest would send someone else to find them.

But it didn't look like this belonged to the Conquest. It appeared to be a perfectly innocuous military plane, based on the size, velocity, and color. The ship's detection systems were quite advanced and trustworthy, so Fian wasn't worried. It was just another false alarm, like he'd seen dozens of times before.

Still, he felt obligated to log it, and told the ship to do so. It was just a good practice. He also resolved to tell Zax about the military plane sightings—maybe sharing the news with his pilot would make his anxiety lessen.

And besides, he hadn't paid a visit in a while, so he hadn't seen the baby and Isaac, except at the occasional pack meeting. Cheered by the idea, he decided to put away the box for now and head out.

After locking up the ship, he stripped and transformed, glad to give in to the urge to shift. Sometimes it was like an unbearable itch, one that would become painful if he didn't indulge it quickly enough. So it was with great relief that he fell on four legs, felt his snout lengthen, and sprouted a bushy tail, which waved behind him like a flag.
