Chapter Seventeen

Catarina

My black hair fell around my shoulders in loose waves, with my veil attached to a delicate tiara. My ivory dress had a bodice with drop shoulders, and the full skirt flared out from the waist in a gentle flounce covered in floral embroidery.

It was elegant without making me look like a fairy to be placed on top of the Christmas tree. Carmen finished buttoning the silk-covered buttons up the back of my dress.

“You look very beautiful. Alex’s parents would be so proud of the man he became. When everyone here needed him, he stepped into his father’s shoes.”

I had searched through the internet to learn how to apply make-up, yet when I sat down this morning in front of the mirror, it came instinctively. I had enhanced my eyes until they were subtly smoky to make them appear bigger. My lips were deep red to add a splash of colour, and the rest of my make-up remained very natural.

“He tends to be there for whoever needs him. He could have left me behind in Cuba with no memories and no way to discover who I am.”

Carmen smiled at me and fussed over fixing my veil. “He loves you very much. There is no way he would leave you behind.”

That was the crux of the matter. In a few minutes I was marrying Alexandro and neither of us had mentioned the love word. I wasn’t even sure what it meant. What if I was making the wrong decision and woke up one day to realise this wasn’t what I wanted?

“Have you ever been in love, Carmen?” I asked while pretending to fix my dress.

“A long time ago. Alexis revenged his death on my behalf.”

That got my attention. “What did it feel like?”

She sat down on the end of my bed and stared into the past. “Everyone experiences love differently, and some confuse it for passion. Yes, Carlito made my heart beat faster and butterflies to erupt into my stomach every time he walked into the room. But to me, love is more than that superficial reaction. When I was with Carlito, I was whole. He made me complete and I knew that no other man would make me feel what he did. It was the reason I never moved on, because when you find the other part of your soul, nothing less will do in a relationship.”

I contemplated her words. Did I love Alexandro? My body craved his, there was no doubt about that fact. My mind floated back to last night in the garden. There was no overwhelming passion when he held me, but I felt peace, his body pulling mine to it with a magnetic force that I couldn’t deny. Was that the same as love?

Carmen’s hand found mine. “Alex loves you. I know you don’t remember the start of your relationship and you’re probably wondering if a few weeks is enough, but in all the years I’ve known him, I have never seen him with a woman.
