Chapter 16: The Festival

“Karasu-kun! Breakfast!” Sakura called out the side door, but he didn’t fly down like usual. She didn’t see his little black body in the tree at all. “Karasu-kun?”

“He’s not there,” Kazuki said from the living room doorway. “I’m sorry. I forgot to tell you, he won’t be joining us for breakfast today. I sent him back to our world.”

“No! Why? He apologized and we’re okay now.”

Kazuki smiled and hugged her. “I didn’t send him back as punishment. He’s running an errand for me, that’s all. He should be back by evening, tomorrow at the latest. I promise.”

“Oh, thank goodness.” She slid the screen door closed and followed him to the kitchen. “We’re finally able to really be friends, so I want to talk to him more.”

When she’d woken up, Kazuki had helped her downstairs for dinner. While they ate, Karasu had joined their conversation rather than just eating and leaving like he usually did. He no longer looked tense and grumpy, and he’d even agreed to move into the attic once it was too cold to sleep outside.

Once they finished breakfast, Kazuki cleared the breakfast dishes while insisting she stay seated. After he was done, he came back to the table and put his hands on her shoulders, a small frown overtaking his features.

“Sakura, you didn’t sleep well last night. Do not try to deny this. I sleep beside you, remember?”

“I’m sorry. I kept you awake?”

“’Tis fine, I do not mind. But will you be okay today? As much as I wish to see the festival, it is not worth risking your health.”

She touched his cheek as she smiled at him. “I’m fine, I promise. I’ll let you know if I get too tired, and I’ll take a nap before the ball.”

“Good. Since we have a few hours yet before we leave, will you indulge my worrying nature and rest until then? I know you usually clean the house Saturday mornings, but I shall do your part and mine. So please?”

“All right.”

“Thank you.” He kissed her forehead then her lips before sending her on her way. She spent the morning lying in the living room, reading the next volume of her favorite novel series. An ad in the front noted that the final volume would be released in December, just before Christmas. At least I’ll get to find out how it ends. She shoved the morose thought away. It wasn’t the day for indulging in such darkness.

At some point, she must have dozed off, as Kazuki woke her just before noon to get ready. They rode the tram down the one stop between her house and the school to reduce the amount of walking they had to do. Hina was waiting for them by the gate.

“Sakura-chan! Kazuki-san!” She bounced over to them, kicking up the long skirt of her winter uniform in the process. “The second concert starts pretty soon, so do you want to go over there first?”

“Sure, we can’t miss his performance. What about Akari-san?”

Hina grimaced.
