Three days later, Millie called and left a message. She would be in Coeur D'Alene on Friday by three o'clock. That gave Clay two more ridiculously long days to wait. While not forgotten, the mystery letter dwindled into the happiness of planning for their reunion. The McKenzie House didn't have their old room available, but the two-bedroom upstairs suite was available. He booked it, ordered fresh-cut flowers for every bowl and vase in the suite, and tried to compose himself. Then, on Friday, he waited for the phone to ring. Millie said she'd call on the road from Bozeman, a six-hour drive from Coeur D'Alene. But since it was only an hour away from his home, he could just wait; she'd call, she always did.

Just before noon, his cell phone rang, and Clay picked up on the first ring. "Millie, are you on the road?"

"Mr. Ramsey, is this Clay Ramsey?"

"Yes, I'm sorry. I was expecting someone else to call."

"Were you expecting a call from Mildred Clark of Bozeman, Montana?"

Hesitatingly, Clay said, "Yes, who is this?"

"This is Officer Kozeliski. I am with the Deer Lodge Police Department."

"Deer Lodge. Isn't that in Montana?"

"Yes, sir, we're right on the Idaho border, a little off I-90 on the road to Coeur D' Alene. I have to ask you some questions about Mildred Clark. Can you confirm that I have the right Clay Ramsey?"

"I'm Clay Ramsey, I already told you that. I was expecting her to call. What's happened? She's on her way here to see me. Is she in trouble?"

"Mr. Ramsey, I am sorry to have to be the one to tell you, but Ms. Clark is dead. We found her body, well actually, it wasn't us, but her car was found this morning off the road just south of here on I-90. We got your name and number in Spokane from a card and a photo she had taped to her dashboard."

Clay dropped to his knees and held the phone with both hands. It suddenly felt wet; his hands couldn't seem to hold on tight enough. He could hear the man talking, but the words were distant as though he was talking to someone else. "Mr. Ramsey, are you still there, sir? Mr. Ramsey . . ."

"What happened, Officer? I mean, my god, you are telling me she's dead, is that right?"

"Yes, sir, I'm afraid that's the case. There was a little sticky note on the photo with two phone numbers. Yours and a hotel in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. I gather she was on her way there to meet you, is that right? But we don't know whether you are family or just a friend."

"No, we weren't related, Officer. I've known her for many years, but it's been some time since I last saw her."

"So if you don't mind me asking, why was she coming to see you in Spokane?"

"She was coming here to renew an old friendship."

"Mr. Ramsey, how was that arranged? I mean, how did you know she was coming if
