A few days after Pendar and Canfield had sent their radio check to Dunderdale in London, a response came in. It confirmed that Abtey – and Josephine – should remain in Morocco and strike up a partnership with the Apostles, passing all intelligence through them. But oddly, it was signed with a mysterious single name only, that of a female – ‘June’. Actually, this was vintage Dunderdale, and fortunately Abtey had a good idea what it might signify. From their time together in Paris he was well aware that Dunderdale’s wife’s name was ‘June’; it had to be a coded means for him to sign off the message.

In 1931, June Woodbridge Ament, a striking-looking blonde woman hailing from the USA, had got married to Dunderdale, after which they’d set up home in a luxurious flat a short stroll from the Eiffel Tower. The granddaughter of the inventor of Morse Code – the system of dots and dashes used for transmitting coded messages by radio – June was also known by her nickname, ‘Morse’. She would go on to fulfil what appears to be a spying role, serving in New York under the British Security Coordination, a deep-cover SIS offshoot based on American soil. But in the summer of 1941 she was in Britain and presumably serving in some capacity – if only as a cover name – at her husband’s side.30

Either way, via ‘June’s’ sign-off Abtey had got the go-ahead from London. With their diplomatic status, their immunity, and their pouches and their radio, the 12 Apostles offered an inviolable means to speed intelligence to London, and onwards to Washington thereafter. So much was clear to Abtey, after his first meetings with the Villa Taylor adventurers. Even as the Paillole–SIS pipeline had ruptured and died, so a new conduit had opened in its place. They were back in the game.
