Elizabeth sat in her truck early Wednesday morning, waiting for Will. He’d been texting her a lot over the past few days, asking to see her, but she kept putting him off, telling him she was too busy and that she would see him at the meeting scheduled for tonight. It wasn’t far from the truth; she needed to finish Acorn Street by tomorrow and deliver it to her client on Friday. But her excuse backfired when he offered to meet her in the lot and promised he wouldn’t take up much of her time.

She knew he wanted to talk about Saturday night, and she couldn’t avoid him forever. The evening had ended on a sour note, with that stupid comment he’d made and her snapping at him in return. Apparently, he hadn’t been in the mood to be teased—or maybe it was just the subject he was being teased about.

Others.

It was something she hadn’t thought of much. She’d asked if he had a partner the night they’d walked out on the pier, and even though she’d claimed it was because she didn’t want to cause any trouble for him, she also didn’t want kissing someone else’s man on her conscience. But learning that Charles’s sister had a crush on him, and then teasing him about his other options...he’d thrown her own words back in her face. Did she like the idea of him with someone else? No. But they weren’t in a relationship; she had no say in what he did or who he did it with, and vice versa, and he had no right to be pissy about it.

Still, a tiny part of her understood. They were both frustrated, and though they’d navigated the waters of their friends-but-more-but-not-really relationship well so far, they were bound to run into some swells.

Unfortunately, Jane had picked up on the tension between them; she’d recognized the words Will said, having heard them nearly verbatim from Elizabeth. They went to the beach on Sunday for a few hours, and Jane had casually asked if there was something going on with them. After some wavering, Elizabeth had answered truthfully and told her there was nothing actually going on, but that there were some feelings involved, and it was making things difficult.

She made Jane swear not to say a word to anyone, especially Charles, and even though Jane promised she wouldn’t, Elizabeth held some worry over confiding in her. Unfortunately, she wasn’t completely confident she could trust Jane with that kind of information, but it was too late now.

Will’s car turned into the lot and parked, and she blew out a deep breath, her eyes following him as he walked to her truck. She wondered if he’d just come from the gym; he wore a tank top and shorts, a baseball hat, and sunglasses, and she couldn’t help but admire the lean cut of his body and the smooth, agile way he moved.

He climbed into the truck, and before she could even say a word, he removed his sunglasses and turned to her.
