Riverview

As I said, we made the journey back to Riverview without incident. Joe fell asleep in the back of the Hummer. He didn’t wake until I eased him out of the car; that was at just after three o’clock that morning.

We’d been on the road for maybe thirty minutes when I suddenly had a thought, I haven’t seen any first responders... Hell, I haven’t even heard any sirens...

“Bob,” I said. “Stop the car. I need to talk to Tim.”

He pulled the Hummer off the road; Tim pulled in behind us.

I exited the vehicle and walked back to the van, signaling for him to roll down the window.

“You didn’t make the call, did you?” I asked.

“Call? What call—”

“911,” I said, interrupting him, shaking my head. “Make it now, airhead. Do it now, and then toss the phone.”

“What was that about?” Bob asked, shifting into drive.

“Just Tim being Tim,” I said.
