âIâVE GOT IT: THE perfect name for the magazine,â Will said.
âWhat?â I asked.
âThe American Review.â He paused for plaudits.
âWhyâAmerican ?â
âDonât you see?â he said, exasperated. âAfter the first World War the writers stayed on, became expatriatesâand started little magazines in Paris. Today itâs different. The important writers of the last twenty years have been Americansâlots of them, anyway.â He caressed the little ginger kitten heâd brought with him from his cat-ridden home.
âYes â¦â I was unconvinced.
âSo what this title does is point out that the world is ready for American writing, American thinking.â
âIs it?â
âIt better beâor it better start. Whereâs the English or French war novel thatâs as good as The Naked and the Dead?â
âThatâs true.â
âAnyway, thatâs the title. And donât you see how great it will be to have a piece by Jean-Paul Sartre appear in an American Review? Get it?â The kitten made a wild leap at an imaginary shadow and landed in a corner near the window. Then it lost interest and curled up into a tiny ball.
âI get it,â I said.
âBesides, it will help me raise backing. The war is only just behind usâpatriotism and all that.â He stood up and brushed the cat hair from his trousers.
âAnd all that.â I nodded.
âListen, Richard. Would you mind if I stayed here tonight? Jesse and I had some words â¦â
âOkay.â
âJesusâthis girl Nina doesnât have much furniture, does she? Iâll take the couch.â
âIf you insist,â I said.
âSure Iâm not putting you out? Jemmy, I mean!â
âFor the next five days nothing matters. The wedding party for Jeremiah takes precedence over all. Are you and Jesse going to get divorced?â
âI donât know. Weâve been separated twice. I guess once more is the mystical number.â
âIn that caseâget out. I donât want the responsibility.â
âThis is just to give her a chance to cool down. Good night.â
âGood night.â
Silence. Then: âWhat are you going to the Gordon party as?â
âWhat?â
âYou knowâitâs a masquerade: characters from the thirties.â
âOh. Thatâs been switched. It was Jemmyâs idea. But Margaret got wind of it and said no. She wants some dignity, I guess.â
âWhoâs Margaret?â
âJeremiahâs bride.â
âOh. Must be rough on Jemmy.â
âYes.â
âStill, she has you.â
âTell her that.â
âOkay, I will.â
âThanks.â
âGuess who I was coming as?â
âCanât.â
âFord Madox Ford. My predecessor. He founded the Transatlantic Review.â
âSorry. Save it for another masquerade party.â
âI have my own surprise for the party.â
âOh?â
âYouâll have to wait.â
âIâll wait. Good night, Will.â
âGood night, Richard.â
Silence. Then: âThe American Review. Edited by Will Green. Published by Jeremiah Gordon. Beautiful!â
âWill?â
âWhat?â
âIf you had words, as you delicately put it, with Jesseâhow come you brought the kitten with you?â
âTwelve kittens: chaos. One kitten: companionship. Good night.â
âGood night.â
