MDS
I let out a moan and tried to look nauseated. Bending over, I put my hands on my knees.
âAre you sick?â Murphy asked.
âNo, no. Iâllâ¦be fine. Justâ¦Iâm a little dizzy, thatâs all. Iâd better justâ¦Iâll be fine in a minute. Iâm sorry.â
âHey, no problem.â
âIâd better sit down,â I said, and sank to the floor.
Murphy squatted in front of me, looking appalled. âWhatâs the matter? Do you need an ambulance, orâ¦?â
âNo. No. Iâmâ¦I get this way. Itâs myâ¦condition kicking up.â
âCondition?â
âMDS.â
âI donât know what that is.â
As far as I knew, neither did anyone else. Iâd just then made it up. âMorning Dehydration Syndrome,â I explained.
âHuh?â
âItâs because I missed breakfast, andâ¦â I trailed off and hung my head.
âDehydration?â he asked.
âWater. I needâ¦water.â
âOkay. Hang on.â Murphy sprang up, dodged past me, and went rushing for the kitchen.
The answering machine was next to my shoulder and slightly behind me. I stood up quickly and turned around. As I listened to cupboards squeak and water run, I picked up the telephoneâs handset, wiped it all over with my skirt and returned it to its cradle. Then I gave the phoneâs keypad a quick rub. When the kitchen faucet shut off, I sank to one knee. I was struggling to rise as Murphy trotted in with a glass of water.
âBe careful,â he said.
Wobbling, I made it to my feet. But as I reached for the glass, I lost my balance accidentally on purpose and fell toward Murphy, bumping the glass. The whole load of water caught me in the chest. It drenched the top of my blouse, doused my exposed cleavage, soaked through my bra, and poured down between my breasts.
As I sagged and grabbed Murphy by the shoulders, some of the water underneath my blouse even raced down my belly and soaked the top of my skirt.
He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me against him.
âMy God,â he gasped. âAre you okay?â
âIâ¦yeah. Justâ¦a little dizzy. Justâ¦Iâll beâ¦fineâ¦In a minute.â
âAre you sure?â
âYou wonât let me fall, will you?â
âI donât think so,â he said, and I felt his arms tighten against my back. He still seemed to be clutching the glass in one hand. His other hand was open and pressing firmly against me.
âIâm not too heavy, am I?â I asked.
âNo. No, not at all.â
âIâm starting to feel better.â
He didnât say anything, but his open hand began to move up and down a little, caressing my back.
âGood thing youâre so strong,â I told him. âI wouldâve fallen flat on my face.â
âSure glad that didnât happen.â
âIâm really sorry about all this.â
âNo need to be sorry about anything.â
âItâs so embarrassing.â
âNothing to be embarrassed about.â
âStumbling around like a drunk.â
âThese things happen. But weâd better get some water into you.â
âInstead of âontoâ me?â
He laughed quietly, his chest shaking against my breasts.
âWhat I really need is a towel,â I said.
He laughed again. Then he said, âI think you are feeling better.â
âYou donât feel so bad yourself.â
He didnât laugh at that one. He just made a sound like, âMm?â and seemed to tighten up slightly.
