THIRTEEN

Awakening

I TOLD TOM THAT I WOULD HEAD to his house upon my arrival. I had the driver stop off at a store, first. Tom was excited to see me, and I was, too, albeit a little tired. I excused myself quickly to freshen up in the bathroom and took a quick shower. I came out with a towel on my head with one of his robes on and joined him in the kitchen where he was making something to snack on.

We chatted about the assignment, and I told him the bits and pieces that I thought were necessary and relevant. We had already discussed a hard rule of what I could and couldn’t, or shouldn’t, divulge. He understood it was for his protection, too.

As we sat at his breakfast table, he reached over to my hand and said, “I have something I want to share with you.”

Yikes, me too. I looked at him and said, “Before you do, there’s something I should share with you, first.” Deep breath in, deep breath out.

I was soaking in his relaxed look, and how perfect he was for me on so many levels. This was going to change everything, if not ruin it. I could feel my chest beating, going in and out.

“Matti, are you going to tell me or make me guess?” he said, smiling.

3.2.1. – I reached into the robe pocket and took out a stick and placed it in front of him on the table, face down. His eyes got wide with shock or anticipation. He slowly picked it up and turned it over. Just one simple marking on it: it was a blue + sign.

He got up from the table and moved over to me, grasped my face, and gave me a kiss, followed by a big smile. My eyes showed the expressions I was feeling, from grateful, anxious, and nervous, to fearful. He bent down on one knee, held my hands together, and said, “Well, the timing for what I need to share is just perfect.” With that, he grabbed into his pants pocket and pulled out a ring.

I hadn’t expected this. My thoughts were reeling. I didn’t even know what to say. We hadn’t spent much time together, but it just felt right.

Before I could get anything out, he started with this: “Matti, I’m sure you think this is crazy. We haven’t even known each other long. But I know you. I also know that I don’t want to live without you. You are everything I could ever ask for; you are witty, smart, intelligent, confident, and obviously messed up, with the line of work you are in, but that’s attractive, too.”

Here he was before me…kind, gentle, funny, educated, gainfully employed, and gorgeous, presenting me with a brilliant band with pave diamonds with a center round bordered in a French-set halo. Never thought I’d like a round diamond, but big round looked pretty damn sweet. I must be crazy or hormonal already.

I sat there looking at this ring. I never envisioned myself being married.
