THE CHURCH OF THE SHOE-BOX SIZED CAR PHONES

When I came to see that there wasn’t a biblical basis for many of the things that I had found confusing about the church, it was quite a relief. Most of the things that had confused or troubled me when I first encountered the church were simply a matter of tradition, not biblical requirements. A tradition can be a practice or way of doing things that originated in 1505, 1925, or even 2005. Traditions develop whenever a church or institution does something that proves to be quite helpful, and they continue to do it again and again. Good, healthy traditions continue to have a clear purpose and meaning, and they reinforce what the church believes is true and important. But some traditions continue to be practiced long after the reason for doing them has been forgotten, and they may not make much sense anymore.

I remember a scene in an ‘80s movie on television in which a man was using a car phone. The movie was filmed when car phones were new, and so the phone was gigantic. It looked to be about the size of a shoebox. It was humorous to see him holding it to his head as he talked. There was even a coil that ran from the phone to the receiver in the car, since it wasn’t wireless. You couldn’t just walk off wherever you wanted with the phone, since the antenna was connected to the car itself. You had to stay in or near your seat to use it.
