Morena

Morena gave a polite laugh at the comment but it was inappropriate enough for her to cringe inside. This was the fourth first date she’d been on this week, and she was sick of it.

Sick of idle, inane chitchat about the weather and movies. Tired of initial attraction that went nowhere, not even enough at the end of the evening to invite him home with her.

In the last three weeks, she had gone for coffee with six men, drinks with three men and a woman, and dinner with the two men she thought had the most potential. All had ended with promises to do it again, to call him soon, but had resulted in a big fat zero in the romance department.

And an even bigger zero in the sex department.

In all the men and women she’d met, not one had tempted her enough to sleep with them.

She had hoped the exercise would find her a new lover at least, but nothing had come of it so far.

“You’re turning into a social butterfly,” Elizabeth had said to her this morning.

For the briefest of moments, Morena had been tempted to confide in Elizabeth about why she was going to so much trouble in the dating department. Elizabeth had given her long, white hair a trim that morning, and the two had chatted about Morena’s evening. But Morena wasn’t the confiding type and even if she was, Elizabeth shouldn’t be her first choice. Morena was happy Elizabeth made Lorde happy, but she hadn’t spent enough time with Elizabeth yet to know what made the younger woman tick.

She had been out on too many dates lately to spend much time with anyone.

Plus, Lorde had been keeping Elizabeth to himself, her and her girls. He had to get to know those little darlings before he could attempt to develop a relationship with them.

The girls had to trust Lorde so they wouldn’t believe the trash their father was throwing at him.

Morena turned her attention back to the man across from her before she drifted even farther away into her thoughts.

It was bound to be a long and difficult road for Elizabeth and Lorde, but Morena was sure they would make it work. Elizabeth was a good woman, albeit a tad vanilla for Morena’s liking but she made Lorde happy. That was all that mattered.

It was Elizabeth’s sweet and pure persona that prevented Morena from ever considering to confide in her. There was no way Elizabeth would ever understand Morena’s past or present. She shuddered to think what Elizabeth thought of the weekends she hosted at Fallen Gardens.

How had Lorde even begun to explain to innocent Elizabeth that Fallen Gardens was also known as Mrs. Robinson’s Bed and Breakfast for swingers?

And that was the real reason Morena was desperately trying to meet someone.

Was she desperate? Did she come across as desperate?

She was fifty-six years old, had been married three times and was looking for a boyfriend. How could she not come across as desperate?

Especially when her past was about to come crashing into her present.
