With one simple knock on the door, I’m left outside with her lunch cooling by the moment. This time, I attempt a louder, semi bang. Behind it, I can hear footsteps and I worry I may be coming off a little too strong.

Pulling back the door, Emily stands in the same denim cut-off jeans and a simple white T-shirt. Her hair is down, and fuck me, she has glasses on. Well, doesn’t she look like a beautiful librarian, book and all in her hands?

“Davenport. What are you doing here?” She looks around my body, then back my way.

“You promised me you’d eat. I was doing my afternoon rounds and happened to ask about you…”

“And you just happened to ask about me?”

The caramel eyes steal a gaze at me, then at the tray and possibly the aroma with it.

“No, I purposely asked about you.”

For the first time since I’ve seen her, she allows her lips to split into a genuine smile. “I guess I didn’t realize how hungry I truly was until now.”

I push the tray into the apartment. “For you, mademoiselle.” I pull off the silver cover to the fancy room service tray and sitting in front of her is her favorite dish.

“You remembered.” It’s a statement.

How could we forget? I take both Ollie’s and Jack’s words to heart and leave everything I want to say silently in my head.

“I’ll leave you to it.” I’m halfway out of the door, and when I’m about to shut it, Emily’s foot stops it.

“Thanks, Davenport. I mean it.”

I want to be asked to stay, but I’ve come to find out her asking for the things she may want are about as easy as me going in space and stealing the moon.

“Anytime, Emily.” I close the door behind me, holding onto the brilliant smile I’d just been rewarded with. And because it’s infectious, I, too, smile and find it stays on my face the entire day.
