Chapter Eleven

I knew I wouldn’t get through this process without facing some serious adversity. As soon as I mentioned Metropolis Architecture firm in Washington, DC, and Stuart Beatty, Robert recounted his tumultuous history with that firm. Right from the beginning of his story, it all came back to me. Metropolis was against Robert alongside the man Robert purchased his firm from to win a major project. Things got hairy. This Stuart Beatty guy even tried to use Robert’s relationship with Carter against him. I remember Belmont working all day and all night to win the construction contract for the project so that he could hire the architecture firm of his choosing. That’s how influential Lord & Lord Enterprises is in the commercial development industry, which makes what I faced today with the Contracts and Projects departments inexcusable.

I realize I have another major issue. Someone on the inside is working against Belmont’s interests. I comb through every piece of paper on my desk, verifying my husband’s signature, finding previous emails that correlate with the decisions made on the contracts and getting overly familiar with all active and future projects.

The sun has descended. I’ve already taken a break to call Susan and let her know I won’t make the dinner with Fred as our special guest. However, I ask her to relay a message to him. Tomorrow, we have a lot of talking to do. Carlinda has already left for the day. She’s not much of a worker bee. Belmont hardly spent any time in the New York office, so she had a lot of free time on her hands before I arrived.

“You’re still here,” Jet says.

I stop rubbing my eyes and yawn. “Yep.”

He stands very still, studying me and then all the papers spread out on my desk. “What’s going on?”

“Have you really studied all of these documents that I’m looking at?”

“What are those documents?”

“Contracts, proposals, accounts.”

“Not like you’re sitting there studying them.”

“Well, you should’ve.”

His smile wavers.

“I feel as if I’m being sabotaged,” I say.

“Sabotaged?”

I point to the chair across from mine, gesturing for him to sit. He walks in carefully and takes a seat.

I go through the stack of faulty contracts. One by one, I show him why most of the ones that are marked to be canceled shouldn’t be canceled. I also explain why the ones that are marked to be renewed should be canceled.

Jet blinks as though he’s just been slapped in the face several times. I rub my eyes. It’s dreadful not knowing whom to trust or not. So many questions run through my mind, and there’s no way I’m too timid to ask them.

“Part of me thinks you couldn’t have known. The other part is wondering how you could have missed it.” I stop rubbing my eyes and search his expression for the answer to my question.

“If there’s a conspiracy to weaken the operations of this company in any way, then rest assured I didn’t know anything about it. I’m on your side, Daisy. I’m on this company’s side.
