CHAPTER 10

Abigail

The kiss lights my entire body on fire. It’s so easy to melt right into Luca’s arms and have him kiss me harder.

But then I hear Hannah laugh in the other room, and I know we shouldn’t be doing this.

I pull back. “Luca, you hired me to be Hannah’s nanny. Nothing else.”

“I know.” His eyes are darker than usual, and it makes me shiver. “And trust me, I didn’t hire you to fuck you.”

I blush at his words. “That’s good, at least. But we shouldn’t be doing this. It’s not appropriate.”

“I hired you at a gentleman’s club without checking your qualifications. I think we’re past what’s appropriate.”

“You may have a point with that.”

“I do.” He offers me a charming smile that makes my body feel hot all over again. “But I don’t want to make you feel uncomfortable. I kissed you because … I like you, Abigail. You call me out on my shit, and no one really does that. Well, except for Antonio, but that’s part of his job. Everyone else walks on eggshells around me, but you’ve never been afraid of me. You hold me to a higher standard, whereas most people see a fuck-up, and that’s it. I like that about you. Hell, you even got me to go to therapy, and I didn’t hate it. That’s because of you.”

“Luca, I’m flattered. But if we cross that line, there’s no going back. I won’t just be Hannah’s nanny any longer. I’ll be your … I don’t know what I’d be exactly, just that I’m not sure I want to be. I know my worth. My home life wasn’t the greatest. I was made to feel horrible about myself. I can’t risk going back to that.”

“I won’t fire you,” he says. “Even if we try something and it doesn’t work out.”

“You say that now, but what if we really did try something and it didn’t work out? How awkward would that be if I continued to be Hannah’s nanny? I don’t know what I would do. I need this job. I can’t risk it.”

“I understand.” He flutters his fingers down my arm before pulling back. “But if you ever want to continue this kiss later, just let me know.” With that, he heads into the living room.

I watch him get on the floor with Hannah and play dolls. It’s a nice thing to see. By the way Hannah’s face lights up, she clearly enjoys it.

Why did Luca have to kiss me? He just went and made everything so much more complicated. Of course, I find Luca handsome. I have since the first night I met him. But he’s a really messed up man. Learning more about his father today has helped me understand him better. It makes sense why he has his issues.

But I left one toxic home with my father. Can I really enter another?
