CHAPTER 4
L.G.B.T.Q. Athletes Break the Silence
Because athletic ideals are often tied to social expectations of gender, professional sports have progressed more slowly in accepting L.G.B.T.Q. players. Previously, athletes who openly expressed their sexuality or gender identity have risked public support of their careers. But recent years have shown more acceptance. Many prominent athletes have âcome outâ and in the process inspired other L.G.B.T.Q. athletes. However, the stories in this chapter show the daily struggle many athletes face to simply live as their full selves.
