Through the darkness of night and swirling snow, Rockcat and Catcom travelled down a road leading to White Beach. Catcom was shining a light to illuminate the way, while Rockcat was letting Catcom know just how upset he was.
ââ¦and I wouldâve told you where Spycat went if you didnât fly off so quickly in the wrong direction!â Rockcat ranted.
âA thousand apologies,â Catcom said sheepishly. âI didnât realise we were at Puka Shell Beach instead of White Beach.
âWell, you shouldâve,â Rockcat continued. âIt took me ages to catch up with you, and now weâve lost so much valuable time. Spycat must be back in the castle by now!â
Rockcat and Catcom soon arrived at White Beach. Immediately, Catcom switched off its light, dimmed its screen and yanked Rockcat behind a signboard to hide.
âHey, what gives?â a startled Rockcat exclaimed.
Catcom stretched out a hand and pointed at a few faint specks of light dancing in the distance. âLook out there on the beach,â the robot hissed into Rockcatâs ear. âWe need to be very, very quiet.â
Rockcat peeped over the signboard and stared at the lights, but he couldnât tell what was making them. âI canât see whatâs going on,â he said in a soft voice. âItâs too dark and snowy.â
Catcom floated up to Rockcatâs face and rotated to show its rear to him. A flap opened, revealing a mechanism with two protruding eyepieces.
âLook through the eyepieces and youâll understand,â Catcom mumbled.
Unsure what to expect, Rockcat clutched Catcom between his paws and peered into the eyepieces. The junior agent then realised he was using Catcom as a pair of powerful night-vision goggles! He could now view the beach clearly. The specks of light turned out to be lanterns, which were being carried by penguin guards. The guards were busy setting up snare traps all over the beach.
Night-vision goggles are a special piece of optical equipment that help you see in the dark. When you look through them, a dark environment appears brighter and more visible to your eyes. The very best night-vision goggles, like the one inside me, have thermal imaging technology too. This means that objects that emit heat, such as bodies and running vehicles, show up clearly in my night-vision goggles.
Rockcat gasped. âWhatâs up with the traps?â he said.
âThe guards know weâll try returning to the castle,â Catcom muttered. âAnd with poor visibility tonight, the guards hope you and Spycat will walk into their traps.â
The guards finished building the last of their traps and started shuffling to a boat moored to the shore. Suddenly, one guard split off from the squad and waddled inland with a lantern in his grip.
âHang on!â the guard hollered to his colleagues. âI have a stomach ache and I need the toilet!â
The other guards groaned and booed.
âHurry back, Flatfoot, or weâll leave without you!â the leader of the squad yelled.
âI wonât be long!â Flatfoot promised.
The wheels in Rockcatâs head turned as he watched Flatfoot enter a beachside hotel. Then the junior agent reversed Catcom so they were face to face, or rather, face to screen.
