Chapter Twenty
LAI CURSED under her breath as she fumbled with the zipper on her backpack. The teeth had caught in the lining, and no amount of pulling was making it budge.
âJaime!â she called over her shoulder. Footsteps sounded behind her, announcing his approach.
âIâve seen you empty a clip into the center of a target at seventy-five yards, and you canât get a zipper to cooperate?â Jaime teased. He snatched the bag from her hands and worked the zipper in his fingers for half a dozen seconds until it could slide smoothly.
âShut up.â She laughed. She gave him a friendly shove and grabbed her bag.
Lai double-checked that her gun was loaded and holstered it. She took a moment to check over her supplies laid out on the table in front of her, not wanting to miss anything.
âYou look ready,â Jaime observed.
âItâs at least three days to St. Louis,â Lai said absently. âMaybe more if we have to cut to the north. We all need to be ready.â
Earlier that morning, Jackie had gathered all fourteen of them, minus Kieran, to explain in full what their plan was. They were to pack all of the supplies that could fit into the two trucks without slowing them down, as well as their own personal supplies. She told them to take everything they needed because once they left, they were driving to St. Louis.
When Lai asked what was in St. Louis, Jackie revealed it was the location of a permanent base. Unlike the one they currently inhabited, it was completely secure and used for main operations. With its encrypted network, it would be the optimal location for spreading the information they had acquired, aside from their main headquarters. Jackie refused to give up that location.
In the three days since the four students had arrived from the academy, Jackie had spent most of her time on the computers. Lai had been with her for half of it as they pored over files and determined they were legitimate. She then shooed Lai away with the claim that she needed to go over confidential information. That was when she would call over Sydney or Romana to assist her. When Lai talked to Angella, the woman simply shrugged and joked that it was above her pay grade.
Lai was glad that they finally had a plan. She was getting tired of the week spent in the warehouse and would be more than happy to never see it again. Jackie instructed them to leave at noon and threatened that anyone who kept them waiting would be walking to St. Louis.
Lai tapped her fingers against her holstered weapon and went through her mental checklist. She scanned the items on the table. She had her backpack with food and water for herself, an extra set of clothes, two extra handguns (courtesy of Angella), and half a dozen clips. Next to her bag was her jacket and belt. The belt had been given to her, along with two grenades and a smoke bomb. Though
