Chapter 12

Escape

SCREAMS PIERCE THE AIR, STABBING into my core. Not just any screams. My screams.

Jerking my wrists as hard as I can, I snap the chain on my restraints. Blood pours from the slices on my wrists, but the pain is nothing like what I feel inside me. I never even had the chance to get to know Williston as anything more than someone with a blood bond to me. Yet, a part of me dies with him.

“Phoebe!” Frederic hollers, shoving the bitch to the wall.

Instead of racing to attack her, I run to Hudson, my body and soul needing one of the loves of my life close to me, and not the bitter taste of vengeance. I can’t risk losing this opportunity. They will keep us apart otherwise. If I can just get to his arms, I’ll be in the safest place I can be in this horrifying situation. They won’t be able to separate us then. Never. I won’t let them.

Lamar dodges between us, trying to cut me off, and a sharp snarl escapes my mouth, my dhampir nature grabbing hold of me and pushing away my humanity. He doesn’t get the chance to fling his lanky arms around me as I bow and ram my shoulder into his gut, using the strength of my determination to flip him over my head and onto his back.

Heath materializes behind Hudson, and rage pushes me to move at dhampir speed. Hudson senses someone behind him and swivels, jabbing Heath in the nose with his elbow. Jerking his head back, he head-butts Heath, sending him crashing to the wall behind him. The bastard drops to the ground and gasps, unable to get up before Hudson kicks his shin hard enough to break his leg.

“Fiona, fuck,” Hudson says, yanking his flimsy bindings off. He puts space between him and Heath, staying on guard. “Fuck!”

I fly at him, the force of my jump not even making him waver as if his body just knows how to handle mine.

“Don’t let go.” Hudson shifts me, readying himself to fight to get us out of here.

“Take one damn step with Fiona, and Rylie is dead,” Phoebe snaps, drawing our attention to her. She pins Rylie to the ground and bares her fangs.

“Run!” Rylie shouts, her eyes blinking silver. “She’s going to kill me anyway. Go!”

Hudson doesn’t hesitate. He wouldn’t. To him, I’m the most important being in the world. He understands and accepts Rylie’s ability to sacrifice herself.

I release a sob, clinging to Hudson as he reaches a door. To where? I have no idea. I don’t know exactly where we are.

“Close your eyes, love. Do it now,” Hudson says, releasing a guttural sound from his throat. I expect for Frederic or the others to charge us, but something is up. They vanish from sight, leaving Phoebe to do as she pleases. And right now, she’s going to end the life of Rylie. She’s going to steal my best friend from me.

“Please, Fiona. Shut your eyes,” Hudson begs, edging his way toward the door.
