CHAPTER 6

Headmaster Chamuel put his hands behind his back. “Underneath Rusty’s bed.”

Rusty squeezed my hand. “I didn’t steal it.”

Professor Ringmaster frowned. “When did the bible go missing?”

“Priscilla discovered that it was missing this morning. It was on display inside a glass case in the private section of the library.”

I blurted, “There’s no way he could have stolen it. He was with me.”

Samantha sneered. “See, I told you she was a sorority slut.”

Murder in his eyes, Rusty moved over toward her. “Take that back, bitch.”

I clasped at his arm. “Rusty, no.”

He broke free from my fingers. “She knows you’re a fucking virgin and I’m tired of hearing her badmouth you.”

Professor Ringmaster blocked his path. “Stand down, Rusty. She’ll have to pay for her crime soon enough.”

Samantha’s face paled and her eyes widened, but she shut up.

Dylan shook his head. “You’re going to be sorry.”

Headmaster Chamuel turned to Rusty and me. “I would like to know why Rusty was in your room, Julie. Fraternizing with the opposite sex in door rooms is expressly forbidden, you know that.”

Heat burned my cheeks and I lowered my gaze.

“We weren’t fucking, if that’s what you’re worried about. Julie’s still a virgin.” Rusty’s angry voice was daring the headmaster to prove him wrong.

Headmaster Chamuel’s back stiffened. “Why, then?”

“We both had dreams about Julian,” Rusty said.

Headmaster looked between us. “What were your dreams? Were they the same?”

“He came to me again,” I murmured. “I used my scythe to send him away, but he came back to my room, pretending to be Rusty.”

The Headmaster looked at Rusty. “Is that what you dreamed, too?”

Rusty’s face tightened as if the headmaster had just called him a foul name. He swore underneath his breath.

Headmaster looked at him curiously. “Rusty?”

He spoke again, louder this time. “He’s a fucking prick.”

I elbowed him in the ribs. “Stop it.”

“He’d better not set one foot here, is all.” He was definitely hiding something.

Professor Ringmaster cleared his throat as if trying to change the subject. “I think we—“

“No.” Rusty’s voice turned into a warning growl and his eyes turned gold as if he was one second away from wolfing out.

I glanced up at him. “Why don’t you want to tell him about your dream?”

Rusty wouldn’t even look at or answer me. Something was definitely up.

I folded my arms. “Did you see something you don’t want me to know about?”

Rusty gripped his scythe. “Never mind. Are we done here?”

He stared straight at Headmaster Chamuel, who rubbed his chin. “Have you made a commitment to join the Gargoyles? The reason your team lost was because you didn’t have all your members working together.”

“Yeah, I am. I don’t want to see them get their asses kicked again.”

Samantha rolled her eyes and lifted her arms up. “Aren’t you all forgetting something?”

Rusty glared. “What?”

Samantha clicked her tongue like duh. “If you were with the slut all last night, then how did St. Peter’s bible wander into your room and under your bed? It didn’t get in there by itself.”

I gritted my teeth. “Obviously, the dark figure.
