Well, the military has been thinking the same thing. The armed forces have been working with lithium-ion battery, technology-powered laser prototypes that could possibly be in use by the 2020s. Not many details are available—it’s classified information. The air force is also developing a sorta-kinda light saber called the TEC Torch—it’s not able to extend as far as a light saber, but it burns hotter than 4,000°F and generates enough heat to slice right through a metal door lock.
