Chapter 27
âHow do you think they took the news?â Konrad asked.
The car bounced onto the main road in a swirl of dust. Until now Lisette had been holding herself in place with a hand on the dashboard. She didnât look at him as she spoke.
âAs well as can be expected, I guess. Itâs hard to tell,â she said. âI canât read them like I used to.â
âAnd whose fault is that?â Konrad snapped.
âFault?â Lisette looked at him. âFault? It has to be someoneâs fault?â
âDidnât you see their faces?â Konrad said. âDid you have to tell them youâd probably never see them again?â
âI told them the truth!â Lisette said. âIt had to be said. What else was I to do? Just walk away and leave them wondering?â
Konrad squeezed the steering wheel as he drove. âYeah, youâre right. Everybody feels so much better now.â
Lisette began to cry. âThis is hard on me too, you know,â she said.
âIâm sure your rich Communist husband will find a way to comfort you.â
âKonrad Reichmann! What an ugly thing to say!â
That was where he was driving her, to Gellertâs house. For a while they fell silent, both of them too angry to speak.
âStop the car,â Lisette said.
Konrad looked around them. Nothing but businesses and small shops. âI said Iâd take you . . .â The next word caught in his throat. He made another run at it. âI said Iâd take you home, and I will. Just point the way.â
âPull over here,â Lisette insisted.
âBut . . .â
âHerr Gellert lives nearby. Iâll walk the rest of the way.â She gathered her things. Her right hand gripped the door handle.
âIâll take you to the house.â
âKonrad, pull over. Now.â
With a jerk of the wheel, Konrad made a sharp exit from throughway traffic, a little too fast. The car jolted as it came in contact with the curb. He left the engine running. âTell me,â he said, âare you ashamed of me, or of him?â
âDonât be childish.â Lisette opened the door.
Konrad grabbed her arm.
âLet go!â Lisette cried.
But he held tight. âItâs me, isnât it? Youâre ashamed to introduce me to him.â
âAfraid is more like it,â Lisette said. âIâm afraid youâll make a fool of yourself.â
She made a second attempt to climb out of the car. He wouldnât let her.
âLisette . . .â
âI said, let go of me!â she shouted.
âPlease, Lisette . . . donât go.â
âHerr Gellert is expecting me.â
âThatâs not what I meant.â
She stopped struggling. Sitting on the edge of the seat with one foot on the curb, she looked at him.
âI meant donât marry this man,â Konrad said.
âI donât see how itâs any concern of yours. You donât even know him.â
Konrad released his grip.
Lisette exited the car. She adjusted her dress and put a hand on the car door to close it.
âHeâs not right for you, Lisette,â Konrad said.
For a moment she just stood there, her hand on the door like a statue. She stood so her face was hidden from Konrad by the roof of the small car.
âThatâs great,â she finally said.
