Developing solutions

We saw in Chapter 7 how various tools are used to refine our understanding of the problem under scrutiny and ways to understand the system. Improvement methods focus on changing the system which produces the outcome we are working on either by: (i) making incremental changes to the current system; or (ii) by changing the system in a fundamental way. These are sometimes called, respectively, ‘reactive’ or Type 1, and ‘fundamental’ or Type 2 changes. In either case, the focus is on changing how routine work gets done – in other words, the inputs and standard processes followed. The Improvement Guide (Langley, et al., 2009) identifies three basic approaches to developing a change which results in improvement:

From clear understanding of processes and systems of work.

From adapting known good ideas.

From creative thinking.
