Afternoon, St. Louis Regional Medical Center

Unfortunately, Doc recognized the setting the moment his eyes opened—a hospital with its hushed murmuring in the halls broken by the occasional announcement and the beeping of equipment at his bedside. What was less recognizable, however, were the sensations from his body as his nerves awoke. Was it really possible for every muscle and joint to ache at the same time? Apparently, it was. But how the change in scenery from Rebecca’s apartment and the shift from passion to pain had occurred, he had no clue. The last thing he remembered, he was in the bedroom with Rebecca. And though the emotional intensity and vision of their lovemaking felt as real as the room where he now lay, other parts of that night were vague and felt out of context. And still other images he recalled were clearly impossible. He wasn’t sure what any of that meant.

When Doc felt he had summoned enough fortitude to stand the pain, he raised his head and looked around the room. It was mostly equipment he didn’t recognize and a rolling table holding a plastic bottle with a straw. But as his gaze moved to the right, he saw Rebecca, her head down as she studied her phone. Though she was wearing a mask over her nose and mouth, her short blonde hair and pale skin were unmistakable.

What was equally clear was the fact she’d also been injured, and if the number of visible bandages and bruises was any indication, she had been hurt badly. There were numerous small dressings on one arm, with a larger covering on the forearm. The other arm was in a sling and her neck was bruised. He wouldn’t have been surprised to find her leg in a cast, but he couldn’t raise his head that far.

“What happened?” Doc managed to choke out through a parched throat.

Rebecca looked up. “Ah, you’re awake. I didn’t catch that, but your parents just stepped out. I’ll send your mom a text.”

Doc cleared his throat and tried again, only slightly stronger this time. “Just a second on the text. First, what happened to us?”

Rebecca gave a half shrug, then waved a hand over her bandages. “I suppose the best answer is, we did this to each other.” Her voice was also hoarse, although less than his. She reached down to the floor, retrieved a drink, raised her mask for a moment, and took a sip.

It was but a single datum—"we did this to each other”—but it was more than enough for Doc’s mind to start racing with the possibilities. Perhaps the most straightforward was that he’d made a mistake in bed, been too rough, gone too far. She’d asked him to stop, and when he didn’t, she responded. Initially, she would have done so with restraint, hoping to avoid hurting him. But when he fought back against her half-measures and hurt her, she had been forced to subdue him. He just didn’t know what self-defense maneuver she could have used that left every part of his body aching.
