And then within a few days of arrival in Annapolis, Alex had witnessed a scene that haunted her still.

She had been on one side of the street near Mrs. Perkins’s house and a white woman and her servant had been coming down the other side.

The man had been carrying a multitude of parcels for the woman and keeping a careful distance behind her. And then he had dropped one of the bundles and had had to move quickly to avoid losing them all. He’d managed to balance the remainder and retrieve the one before Alex could start across the street to help him. And as casually as if she’d been swatting a fly, the woman had turned and cuffed the man.

“You lazy fool, I told you to bring the basket! If any dirt got on my new gloves, I’ll have your hide.”

The two of them had walked on as if nothing had happened.

Alex had been frozen in place. Even had the incident not happened so quickly, she doubted she could have intervened. There had been something self-contained about the action, as if it were a well-rehearsed theatrical set piece, neither actor having to think as the scene unfolded. The ugliness of it had washed over her, making her feel physically ill.
