Jack’s grin was infectious. ‘My carrot top and missing arm make me conspicuous whatever I’m wearing. However, I get your drift. Mainwaring said not to wander about in public if we can avoid it.’

‘That’s all very well, but both of us live a couple of miles from our ferry pool and we can’t always get from place to place by Anson.’

‘I don’t know a lot about London villains but I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t send anyone looking for either of us any further than Romford. As long as we stay away from London as well, I’m sure we’ll be in no danger.’

‘We’re getting strange looks standing about out here so let’s go in and make that phone call. I can’t tell you how sorry I am that we didn’t have our three nights together. It might be months before our days off coincide again.’

He brushed a stray curl from her cheek. ‘Neither of us are due back on duty for another three days – we could spend it at your cottage if you like.’

She didn’t hesitate. ‘Yes, that’s a splendid idea. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it myself. Amanda might be there some of the time but she’s very broadminded.’

His eyes darkened and his smile was dangerous. She stepped willingly into his arms and they kissed passionately. When she finally raised her head, her cheeks were glowing and her lips tingling; she was horrified to see a row of grinning faces watching through the window of the office.

Jack ignored them. ‘They’re just jealous that we’re in love. I suppose we’d better go in and see if there’s a taxi going to Southampton sometime today.’
