Chapter Five

‘Lottie, what do you think about the wellies? Should I go for flowers or dots?’

In her room, smearing a thick layer of strawberry jam onto her toast, Lottie puffed out a weary breath. ‘I don’t know, Mum. What goes best with your outfit?’

‘According to your father, neither. He says pleated satin skirts weren’t meant to be worn with wellies. Which is all very well for him to say, but he’s not the one who’ll end up tottering about in a pair of soggy slingbacks.’

That being an image she had no intention of contemplating, Lottie took a bite of toast and turned to the window where the February sun hung low in a baby blue sky.

‘Actually, Mum, you might not need wellies. It stopped raining yesterday.’

‘Hmmmmm,’ zoomed back the unconvinced reply. ‘Oh, but before I forget, darling. I spoke to Saskia yesterday. I couldn’t wait to hear how she was getting on with Versace. It’s all so exciting, although she says she hasn’t seen any safety pins yet. She’s going to be extremely busy today, but she asked me to remind you to put the orchids in the fridge the moment they arrive.’
