Sunbeams stretched from the horizon like a cat waking up as Corwin climbed the steps to his own home. We had spent the hours talking, drinking tea, sometimes just pondering in silence. It was an odd yet comforting way to spend an otherwise disappointing evening. What started out as a popcorn pity party had turned to something much stranger.

And dangerous.

According to Corwin, no one else knew he was a vampire. He told me his day-walker token, which Sarah had blessed, carried magical protection unlike anything he’d seen before. Sarah was a Woode, and I knew the Woodes were fire witches, but the charm she’d made for Corwin had magic from each of the elements. He should have been essentially invincible, and yet he was afraid. Whatever had happened to Willow here really rattled him.

Maybe I didn’t know enough to be fearful, and that made me second-guess everyone I’d spoken to since I’d arrived in Shadow Hollow.

As I turned to go back inside, a flood of warmth coursed through my weary bones. A sensation of spoken words soothed my bruised ego and boosted my confidence. I wish I could have heard them, and remembered them, but I only felt them.

It had been one hell of an emotional day. I’d gone from anxiously waiting to meet Corwin Pitts but getting brushed off, to having him appear practically at my feet. He had relayed terrible things to me, things about Willow she should have told me and didn’t. He shared personal sorrow. I’d gone from not knowing him, to hating him, to pitying him and wanting to shield him from the harshness of real life, to admiring him…and somewhere along the way, I started thinking of him as more than just a wild fantasy.

Corwin Pitts was someone I could imagine spending my life with.

I’d never imagined anything like that before.
