Chapter 20

If I could rearrange the alphabet, I would put U and I together.

Aiden is waiting for us in the lobby of the police station when we arrive. He kisses my cheek in greeting before motioning to the door. “Come on back.”

I wave to Barney, but he follows me. “What are you doing?”

“Coming with you.”

“I’m a big girl. I can talk to the scary police officer by myself.”

He bends close to whisper, “Until we know who ransacked your apartment, I’m not leaving you alone.”

Not leaving me alone? Who does he think I am? A toddler who doesn’t know how to walk yet? I open my mouth to tell him exactly what I think about his proclamation, but then I notice the noise of the station has calmed down and all eyes are trained on us.

I huff. “We will talk about this ‘not leaving me alone’ shit at a later time.”

He smirks. “I can’t wait.”

I’m starting to think he gets off on annoying me. “Whatever.”

Aiden leads us into a bare-bones room. I survey the room and notice a mirror covering one wall and a table bolted to the ground. I gasp. “Is this an interrogation room?” I approach the mirror and tap on it. “Is this a two-way mirror?” I wave at it. “Is someone observing us right now?”

Barney chuckles before grasping my elbow and guiding me to a chair. I notice there’s a hook in the middle of the table. “What is this for?” Aiden shakes his head at me. And then it hits me. “Is this for a suspect’s handcuffs?” I hold out my hands, palms up. “Shackle me, officer. I’ve been a bad girl.” I drop my voice an octave, “a very bad girl.”

“We can explore using handcuffs when we’re at home, Trouble,” Barney whispers into my ear and goosebumps explode on my skin. I’ve never been into being tied up, but if he talks to me in his deep voice while I’m constrained, I’ll definitely consider it.

“Do you want me to leave?” Aiden asks and breaks the moment.

“Can I leave with you?”

Barney glares at me. “No one’s leaving until you tell Aiden what you told me this morning.”

The amusement flees from Aiden’s face. “Do you have an idea about who broke into your apartment?” He barks out the question and suddenly I don’t find this room amusing anymore.

I sigh. “Maybe, but you can’t tell your wife about it. She’ll gossip to the entire group, and I’ll lose my job.”

Aiden nods. “Whatever happens here remains between us.”

“Promise?”

“Unless and until the DA prosecutes whoever did this, the information is confidential.”

“Okay,” I say and proceed to tell him about the events I told Barney earlier today.

“Well?” Barney prompts when Aiden remains quiet after I finish my story. “Can you pick Sturgess up with this information?”

“I hate to say this but no.”

“What do you mean no?” Barney explodes. “He’s obviously planning to kill someone, and he broke into Val’s apartment.”

Aiden holds up his hand. “We have no proof he broke into Val’s apartment.
