Chapter Seventeen

When Jerome walked through the door at seven o’clock, he found Adrian pacing circles around their living room. His hair was a frazzled mess, as if he had been trying to pull it out all day.

“Hey, dude,” Jerome said. Best friends since high school, they had been living together for the past three years. “What’s wrong with you?”

Adrian laughed harshly. “What’s wrong with me? What’s wrong with women?”

Jerome noticed a bottle of rum in Adrian’s hand, only a quarter full. He was fairly certain that same bottle was unopened as of last night. “What happened?”

Jerome worked as a manager at Qdoba, and had brought home a bag of chips and queso, which he placed on the table along with his keys.

“Okay, let me tell you something,” Adrian said, spinning around and falling into the recliner. “I like Natalia. Before you get on my case, no, I didn’t leave Barbara for Natalia. But Natalia showed me a different side of myself in Vegas. Exploring that other side of me is why I ended up leaving Barbara. Does that make sense?”

“Sure,” Jerome said, taking a seat on the couch, settling in for a rant.

Adrian lay on the couch like a patient in a therapist’s office, staring and talking to the ceiling. “I never wanted to hurt Barbara, but I had to make a change, you know? It wasn’t fair to either of us to stay together if one of us—me—wasn’t all in.”

“So what’s the issue?” Jerome asked. “Why have you drunk an entire bottle of rum?”

Adrian snorted. “I haven’t had the entire bottle. Not yet.”

Jerome had seen Adrian suffering plenty in the days following the breakup. He supposed whatever helped numb the pain was okay for this type of scenario. He’d bounce back and be himself in no time. “That’s beside the point. Tell me what’s up. How can I help?”

Adrian had always been there for Jerome, ever since high school. He was a steady sounding board and had helped him through his share of rough breakups. Now, Adrian needed to lean on his friend to get through this difficult time.

“I’m not sure you can help too much,” Adrian continued, bobbing his head side to side like he was trying to get comfortable. “You haven’t even met Natalia, so it’s not like you can give me insight into what she’s thinking. She had invited me to go to this fashion show she’s modeling in. I was totally down. But I just found out today that she went out with her ex last night. They even kissed. Now, don’t get me wrong, she has the right to do that. But why play games with me? If she wants to go back with that guy, then go back to him. Don’t drag me along for the ride and keep sending mixed signals.”

“You know it was for sure her ex? Who told you this?”

“Melissa from work. I guess Natalia told her what happened.”

“Hmmm.” Jerome stroked his chin. “And you’re sure it’s credible?”

“Why wouldn’t it be? Melissa has no reason to make this stuff up.
