Chapter Ten

Kelly was disappointed Neil was not at home when she telephoned; she’d psyched herself up for the confrontation. Worse, his mother had answered the phone, squealing in delight, “Kelly, darling, how wonderful to hear your voice. How are you doing? When are you coming home? I guess I don’t have to tell you Neil is beside himself. He misses you so terribly. He didn’t know where to write, but your mother tracked you down, it seems. And poor Verna! She’s a basket case with you gone.”

So what else is new, Kelly had felt like asking. Instead, she skirted Dodie’s questions with one of her own, “When will he be back? I can call him later.”

“Oh, there’s no telling,” she had cooed. “He’s been taking diving lessons with the kids at the Y, and then they go out for pizza. You know how they are,” she had giggled.

Kelly had softly groaned. Kids! Dodie always referred to Larry and Brenda and Chad and Vickie as kids. She probably thought they went to Showbiz Pizza and ate while watching the puppet show. And how ironic it was that she’d never found time to take diving lessons with the others and here she was plunging headfirst into the water and also into love, it seemed. Finally, she had said, “Well, tell him I’ll call him tomorrow.”

“I can have him call you when he gets in. What’s the number there, dear?”

“Never mind. Nice talking to you, Dodie. Bye.”

When she had returned to the hotel, Mike was there waiting on the porch. Edie was keeping him company, and Kelly answered the question in her eyes with a slight shake of her head to let her know she hadn’t been able to reach Neil.

Mike had brought his Jeep and he and Kelly headed to the cove for a swim.

Kelly couldn’t help herself. The dread of knowing she had to talk to Neil was like a pall on the evening. Mike sensed something was bothering her, and, hoping to get her mind off whatever it was, suggested they go out for the evening. She was all for it. He took her to an island bar where there was a steel drum band for entertainment and dancing. They both got in the spirit of things, doing the limbo, trying the Lambada. Anna was there and eagerly introduced Kelly to her fiancé, and she found herself making new friends. They were invited to a cookout on Saturday night, and another couple wanted them to go into Nassau for an evening of nightclub and barhopping. Others suggested future outings like an open dive, once Kelly got her certificate, and one young man had a deep sea boat and said they had to all get together for an all-day outing soon. Depression and apprehension faded along with the night. The bar closed at three A.M., and Kelly and Mike found themselves included in a raid on the Mariner’s kitchen, led by Anna. When they finally stepped outside, darkness was being assaulted by the first creeping fingers of dawn on the eastern horizon.
