âOkay, but who?â Mia asked. âSome golfer who hit into the trap and got lucky? Whatâs that look on your face?â
âAre you Tad?â I asked a young man twenty minutes later. Weâd gotten his name and location from a woman working at the clubhouse. Sheâd checked in with him via a walkie-talkie clipped to his belt.
âYeah?â Tad said. He was in his early twenties. Slender. Extremely blond hair. Had a tan from working outdoors all the time. He was working on what appeared to be some sort of pump that was part of the sprinkler system.
I said, âIf I left a club in a sand trap last night, right before dark, I understand you wouldâve been the person to find it, right?â
âYeah, but I didnât find anything this morning.â
âThatâs because I didnât actually lose a club. I just wondered who wouldâve found it if I had lost one.â
He looked at me, puzzled. âWell, thatâs weird, but okay.â
âThe point is, you tend the traps every morning, right?â
âI do, yeah.â
âThat includes raking them?â
âYes, sir.â
âHow long have you been doing that?â
âAbout four years. Iâm not sure what this is about. Did you really lose something?â
âI lost my sense of wonder years ago, if that counts. But letâs not worry about that right now. Instead, I need to ask you one more question, and if you answer it honestly, no matter what the answer is, I promise weâll leave and youâll never see us again. No cops, either. Just tell the truth and weâre gone. You understand what Iâm saying?â
âNot really.â
âBut if you lie, things will not go well.â
âLie about what? Dude, Iâve got no idea what youâre evenââ
âThe cash you found in the sand trap.â
He looked at me for a long moment, then said, âOh.â
