Chapter 6:

The Company of German infantry emerged from the far tree line, moving with the purpose and discipline of hardened veterans.

Hauptmann Kurt Wolf, commander of A Company, 371st Panzergrenadier Battalion, swung his HK416 onto a Russian soldier standing in the forest clearing and fired twice. The H&K assault rifle was the standard weapon of the Bundeswehr. The light-weight weapon chambered the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge and was used by several other Allied army units, including the Norwegian Armed Forces, the French Armed Forces and the US Navy’s SEAL Team Six.

The Russian soldier that Wolf had fired at sagged at the knees, his face white with shock and his mouth hanging open. Wolf ran past the dying Russian, waving his men forward, urging them to close the range to the enemy.

The Russians were pinned between the American Platoon holding the riverbank and the German Bundeswehr at their rear. The surviving Russian BMP-2 in the clearing turned on its tracks, sideswiping a sapling to face the German surprise attack. The gunner in the turret opened fire with the vehicle’s autocannon but a heartbeat after the first bullets began thrashing the air around the advancing Germans, one of the Bundeswehr dropped to his knee and fired on the BMP-2 with a Panzerfaust. The Panzerfaust was a lightweight, shoulder-fired, unguided anti-tank weapon used by the German Army. A milli-second after the operator squeezed the trigger the projectile’s rocket motor ignited, sending the missile flashing across the forest clearing. The range was less than five hundred yards, and the BMP-2 was lit up by the fiery glow of its autocannon’s muzzle-flash. The operator saw the projectile fly straight and true through the Panzerfaust’s UP-7V telescopic sight, following the trail of grey wispy smoke until the front of the Russian IFV was suddenly enveloped in a wicked flash of light and a bloom of black smoke. The BMP-2 burst into flames that leaped from a rent torn in the front hull armor. The vehicle’s hatches were thrown open and the crew of the IFV emerged screaming and consumed in licking fire. One man fell to the grass writhing pitifully. The commander of the Russian vehicle fell thrashing to the ground and somehow managed to jam the barrel of his sidearm down his throat, ending his own life and cutting his wretched agonized screams short before he was cruelly burned alive. The sound of the bullet whiplashed across the darkness.

The German infantry came on, roaring their battle-cry. The Bundeswehr veterans charged across the forest clearing, firing from the hip as they surged forward.

The Russian infantry spread throughout the woods turned in shock.

Captain Wolf pointed east and west, directing his men. “Watch those bastard IFVs to the east!” he shouted. “Hit them with the Panzerfausts!”

A handful of Germans broke from the attack and formed a thin line in the trees to the east of the heroic charge to fend off the approach of the returning Russian IFVs. A light machine gun opened fire on the enemy truck and two Bundeswehr dropped to their knees and fired anti-tank projectiles into the flames-lit night.
