I was in the midst of packing the necessities when there was a soft knock at my door. Quickly, I tossed the bag and its contents beneath the bed and took a seat in one of the plush armchairs, opening a book on my lap.

“Come in,” I called, expecting to see Laurelle.

My heart gave an unexpected flutter when Quinn stepped through the doorway. I wished it would stop doing that each and every time I saw the man. I wasn’t sure when exactly that sensation had started, but it was unnerving. Even the talisman hummed happily at his appearance.

“Is something wrong?” I asked. I hadn’t been alone with Quinn since the night I’d had my vision.

He shook his head.

“I hope I haven’t interrupted,” he said.

“You’re never an interruption,” I replied. “I was just trying to keep up on my herbal knowledge.” I held up the book for him to see.

Dark eyebrows rose in obvious disbelief as he glanced from the book to my face.

“Not the most interesting topic, I know—” I began.

“And especially difficult to understand when read upside down, I would imagine,” he commented. His gaze shifted around the room.

“Oh…” I said, my voice falling away as I regarded the book, feeling exposed.

“So, what were you really doing?”

“I was searching the stone,” I said without hesitation. The lie was smooth to my own ears, and Quinn seemed to believe it as easily as I had told it. I wasn’t sure where it had come from or when I’d gotten good at lying.

“Any luck?”

“No,” I said, picking up the stone around my neck. Startled, I dropped it again.

“What’s wrong?”

“It’s…” I pulled the pendant from my neck, staring hard into the deep blue center. “It’s warm.”

“It’s been lying against your skin.”

“No, not warm like that,” I said, quickly becoming entranced with it. I could swear the cobalt abyss shifted. It seemed as though its green edge had swirled ever so briefly. “Remember Stonehaven? It’s almost…my hand tingles.”

“May I?”

“Of course,” I said. I looked up at him, hearing a tiny snap in my ears as I did. When I glanced back at the talisman again, it seemed as though the stone was as it had always been. “Did you hear that?”

Quinn shook his head. “What did it sound like?”

“A pop.”

“The fire?” he asked with a shrug, holding the talisman close as he examined it.

I felt silly. “Could be, I suppose.” In awe, I watched him as he seemed not to be bothered by the shocks he was surely receiving. Finally, burning with curiosity, I asked, “Doesn’t it hurt?”

He shrugged as he finished examining the pendant and handed it back to me. “You can get used to anything if you train yourself,” he answered.

I raised an eyebrow. “And you’ve been training against electric shocks?”

He gave a small smile that failed to touch his eyes. “You never can tell, can you?”

I could only shake my head. Either Quinn was weirder than I thought, or he was messing with my head. Accepting the pendant, I
