I spent Saturday morning running errands. When I came home I found a note from Richard that he’d gone to the office for a bit and then would hit the gym. Even though it had been a while since I’d been back from Patty’s, I still hadn’t completely caught up on many of the usual day to day things. I used the time to store my luggage, organize odds and ends, and rearrange my wardrobe.

I’d hung the new dress, which I would always think of as my appreciation dress, in the very front of the closet. I liked having it on display, to remind me—and Richard—of what I’d done to him the day he first saw me in it. Perhaps the next time I wore it would be to show a different kind of appreciation. Richard might get just as much happiness from me wearing it for another man as for him.

The dress, and the entire act of organizing, was akin to my increasing awareness and acceptance of my own sexual needs. Putting things in their proper place. Not just clothes, but my needs and desires. One kind of physical relationship with Richard, another with Marcus. Or another man.

But it was one thing to believe I could compartmentalize my needs, it was another to actually have it work in real life. It seemed to be so with Marcus; enough time had passed for me to accept that while he was special to me sexually, and perhaps even beyond, I was not in love with him, not had likely ever been. Not once in the time since I’d returned from the reunion did I have a single second thought about whether I should have come back, or whether I should be with Richard.

This was home, and in a way, Richard was my home as well.

Still, just as a ship had a home port, that didn’t stop it from sailing off to exciting destinations. Temporary destinations, the risks of the voyage and the thrills of discovery mitigated by the reassuring belief there was a welcome home at the end of the journey.

Richard and I had touched on aspects of this way of thinking, but I was finally seeing it in a new light. I was ready to take another journey. A new one. Which meant one without Marcus.

So now the question was whether there were other men like Marcus who could fulfill my sexual needs beyond what Richard could satisfy. I mentally shook my head. That wasn’t it. Richard did satisfy my needs—the needs I seemed destined to have met by him. And him alone. It wasn’t that Richard couldn’t satisfy me, it was that I had other needs that only other men could birth. Needs I might not have even known I had, undiscovered needs. Needs that required a new journey to find.

And bring home to share.

My needs didn’t exist in a vacuum. Richard had his need as well. Wanting me to be with other men.

The solution was obvious, but fraught with challenges and risks.
