Chapter 7

It was only when Kami had Magic safely tethered to a railing in the corral that she finally breathed easy.

The journey down the mountain had gone well. There had been no problem leading Legend and Magic back to the stables. By the time the corral was in sight, Tom and Kami could see that Lizzie had already jumped into the small trailer to drive back up to Snake Rock. Still, Kami hadn’t relaxed until she and Cool Kid had led Magic along the creek and into the yard.

“Hey, Kami!” Hayley ran out of the ranch house to take Cool Kid from her. “We heard what happened. Is everyone okay?”

Kami nodded. “Your horse was amazing,” she said. “He tracked down the runaways.”

“You bet he did!” Hayley said with a smile. “Cool Kid, you’re so smart!” she cooed as she tied him to a nearby railing and brushed him down.

Kellie had already taken Dylan from Tom and left him to deal with Legend. “You two need to work fast,” she reminded them.

“Thanks for telling me something I already knew, Sis,” Tom replied.

“Did someone call the vet for Pepper?” Kami asked as she started to groom Magic.

“Becca’s on it right now,” Kellie answered.

As she spoke, Becca appeared on the ranch house porch, shading her eyes against the low morning sun. She seemed nervous and held back from joining the group as she glanced anxiously in the direction of Snake Rock.

“So we heard Pete Mason paid us a visit,” Hayley commented.

Tom nodded and said, “It looks like he went into the meadow and deliberately separated Legend and Magic from the rest, then spooked them so bad they took off into the mountains. Pepper probably got mixed up in the drama by accident.”

Kellie frowned as she watched Becca slowly step down from the porch. “Maybe this is me being too suspicious,” she began, “but you don’t think —”

“That Becca was involved?” Hayley broke in. “Why would she be?”

“Maybe she was so jealous that she wanted to wreck the new deal. Maybe she called Mason and put the idea in his head,” Kellie suggested.

But Hayley didn’t sound convinced. “No way!” she said. “Becca wouldn’t risk her own horse!”

“Not on purpose,” Kellie pointed out. “But what if Tom’s right and Pepper got involved accidentally?”

Becca was now too close to the corral for them to share any more suspicions.

As Kami ran her brush through Magic’s mane, she wondered if her rival was ruthless enough to try something like that. But she quickly banished the thought from her mind.

“Hey, Becca.” Kellie’s tone was curt. “Have you talked to the vet?”

Becca walked slowly into the corral and across to the tack-room porch, where she stood in the shade. “He’s on his way,” she confirmed.

Kami sneaked a look over Magic’s shoulder. Becca was drained of her normal confidence; she looked all shaken up. “Try not to stress. Pepper will be back soon,” Kami called.

“Thanks,” Becca said. She glanced at her watch, then hung her head. She seemed to think for
