Summer Reflection

The next morning, Helen greeted her at the bottom of the stairs as Sammy descended from her apartment. “Good morning, dear. How are we feeling?”

Sammy shook her head. “I don’t think I want to answer that honestly.” It was only reasonable that finding a dead body and having to deal with the police would wear her out, but Sammy felt like a piece of paper that’d been crumpled up and thrown away. Even when you did your best to flatten it out again, it was never the same as a crisp, new sheet.

“Why don’t you take the day off?” Helen asked, putting a warm arm around her shoulders. “It shouldn’t be too busy today.”

“All the more reason for me to stay, actually, so I can get ahead of the baking schedule.” Sammy glanced across the kitchen, seeing that the next flat of berries had already been delivered and was waiting for her on one of the counters.

Kate leaned against the counter and tucked her hands in her apron pockets. “So, what’s your next step as far as the bakery? I can think of a few places that might work.”

But Sammy shook her head. “I appreciate it, but I don’t think there’s much point. I kept looking for a sign as to whether or not I’m supposed to do this, and I think Ed’s death is a pretty big sign. It might happen for me later, but not right now.”

“Don’t give up so easily,” Helen advised, taking on that grandmotherly attitude that all the customers loved. “You don’t think I started this place up in a day, do you?”

Sammy had really never thought about it. “I don’t know.”

The older woman laughed. “It was one of the toughest things I’d ever done. Keep in mind it was quite some time ago, so not everyone was keen on a woman running her own business. I fought tooth and nail to keep myself afloat, especially that first year. I barely had enough plates and glasses, and I had to wash them about twenty times a day just to make sure there were always some clean. At that point, I was living upstairs. I ran up there to get my own plates one day when we got a rush.” She laughed, a twinkle in her eye. “It was all worth it, though, every bit of it.”

Sammy nodded. “Yeah, I guess you’re right. I can’t let the little things stop me. But I am scheduled to work today, and no matter what happens with the bakery, I’m determined not to let you down.”

“You couldn’t let me down if you tried,” Helen assured her. “And really, honey, you need an extra day. Anyone in your situation would. Go. Go back to bed, go shopping, go work on your bakery, whatever makes you happy. But go.”

“All right.” It was hard not to smile around these two, when they were always so understanding and encouraging. “I’ll see what I can do.”

While she knew the next logical step was to find a new building for the bakery.
