Chapter Fourteen

Crystal ate one last forkful of the death-by-chocolate cake they’d ordered to split for dessert and pushed the plate closer to Janie. “If I eat another bite, I’m going to explode.”

Janie pulled the plate closer. “I, on the other hand, have a tiny spot left to fill in the upper left quadrant of my stomach.”

“Oh my gosh.” Crystal shifted in her chair, trying to make herself more comfortable. “I should’ve ordered the salmon.”

“Yes. You should’ve. It was delicious.”

“It was.” Crystal widened her eyes. “Thank you for sharing a bite with me.”

“Absolutely. Your steak was pretty tasty as well.”

They’d shared a portion of their dinners with each other, which Crystal hadn’t expected—hadn’t been in the habit of doing with other women she’d dated. Dated—she rolled that thought around in her head for a few seconds. Crystal really was on a date with a woman who, in all practicality, could end up hating her when she found out why she was here. She pushed that thought from her head. Dinner had been much more relaxed than Crystal had expected. The nervousness between them seemed to have transformed into a comfortable easiness that she thoroughly enjoyed. She’d have to thank Dana tomorrow for the wine and all the extra attention she’d had their server give them.

“We should get going if we want to get a good spot near the main fire pit.” Janie scanned the room. “I’ll get the check, and then I need to visit the restroom before we head that way.”

“I got dinner.” Crystal had let the waitress know to charge it to her room when she’d gone to the restroom earlier.

“I invited you.”

“I know, but you’ve done so much for me since I’ve been here. Volunteering to be my personal tour guide and all.” Crystal was truly grateful for every minute of it. “I wanted to thank you somehow.”

“You didn’t have to do that, but thank you.” Janie stood. “I’ll meet you at the front desk.”

“Sounds good.” Crystal took a quick sip of water before she stood and followed Janie out of the restaurant into the lobby. She went straight to the check-in area to chat with Dana, who was busy working on something behind the counter. “I thought Janie said you’re working at the marshmallow roast tonight?”

“I am. Just can’t seem to get out of here.” Dana glanced around the lobby. “My night clerk should be here soon.”

“Thanks for the VIP service in the restaurant. The wine and the food were delicious.”

“I’m glad to hear that. You can spread the word in your company when you get back.”

Crystal’s stomach knotted. She’d been ignoring her mission while she’d been enjoying Janie’s company. “I’ll definitely do that.”

“I’m sure once you convince the town council to move forward with the Wi-Fi installation, you’ll be back on a regular basis.”

“Yes. Absolutely.” But Crystal wouldn’t be back. She’d been brought in only to make the deal happen. She wasn’t the regional representative for this area. She spotted Janie on her way from the restroom.
