I spend the week a jittery mess and text Merrin approximately five hundred times. We’re split in our decision of what Mason’s invitation means. She’s one-hundred-percent sure it’s because he’s hoping something happens, but I’m unconvinced. Whatever his reasons, and as awkward as it will absolutely be, I’m…excited?

I’ve packed, overthought every choice, unpacked, and repacked my bag three times by the time Mason calls Wednesday.

“Slight hitch,” he says, and my heart sinks. “My sister-in-law was put on bedrest this morning after her prenatal checkup.”

“Oh, gosh. How far along?”

“Almost eight months.”

“Poor woman.” I say poor woman, but I’m thinking whyyyy?

“Daniel and I are heading to my parents to exchange presents, then they’re heading to Coeur d’Alene to see Logan and Rachel’s crew. I figured adding another toddler to the mix right now wouldn’t be helping.”

“Oh” is all I can say as I sink onto my mattress.

“Here’s the thing,” he sighs. “You’re still invited to the cabin. But it’s totally your call on whether you’re comfortable with that.”

“Oh,” I say again, unable to manage more than a single syllable.

“You can take your time and think about it.”

“Stevie!” a small voice cries in the background.

“Hey, Danny. Are you excited for Christmas?”

“You gonna come sledding with me,” he says.

“Danny Boy,” Mason says softly. “It’s still a maybe. Be patient, buddy.”

“Don’t worry, Stevie,” Danny says. “It’s kinda scary the first time, but I’ll show you how and keep you safe.”

“Well,” I sigh. “How could I say no to that?”

The line is quiet for a moment. I almost ask if anyone is still there.

“You’ll come?” Mason asks.

“I’ll come.”

It’s subtle, but I think I hear a clap or a high five.

“Okay, then,” he says. “We’ll see you tomorrow.”

I unpack everything and start all over again. This time I include the makeup and shampoo Merrin bought me for Christmas, then spend an hour watching eyeliner tutorials.
