All I remembered was a throbbing in my head and a sharp pain simmering in my side before blackness swallowed me. My vision spun as I opened my eyes before everything slowly came into focus. The bed beneath me felt harder than the bed in my room. The ceiling soared above me, and the room ran long with several beds and curtains lining the walls. Nobody was around.

A wave of dizziness crashed over my head when I tried to sit up, and memories of the night before surfaced. Was it the night before? It could have been hours or days since the forest for all I knew. I couldn’t recall how I was brought here. I barely managed to stab the beast before I slumped over, watching as Kota got pinned to a tree. I couldn’t move my body or do anything to save her. I had never felt so inept.

Wait. There was another memory. One I vaguely remembered. A couple of women were at my side, dabbing my face with something wet. Another lifted my shirt, and I jerked away. The women attempted to calm me, but I refused, begging them to not take off my shirt. I must have blacked out soon after, because I couldn’t grasp if they’d listened or not. Shifting on the bed, something scraped against my torso.

Heart jumping, I quickly raised my shirt. A wide bandage wrapped around the cut I had gotten from the beast.

Panic seized me.

They know. Whoever those women were, they must have seen the Dark mark. They surely would have told someone, and my secret would be revealed, and I would—

I paused my racing thoughts. If they had told someone, why was I still here? This room was certainly part of the castle. Possibly a place for the sick and injured, judging by all the beds and my current state. As I looked down at the bandage again, I realized the mark hadn’t spread that far yet. And the shirt I wore was the same one I wore at the ball, although torn and stained with blood.

I lay back down, the tension in my chest easing. That was too close. I couldn’t get hurt again. I couldn’t risk anything happening to me until my deal with Killian was done. As I tossed and turned some more, I noticed my wound didn’t burn like it used to. It was sore, but nothing drastic. Maybe the women applied some sort of pain-soother, or maybe I healed faster than I thought.

My eyes drifted closed, but I wasn’t tired. I couldn’t believe I’d survived enduring those beasts. Whatever they were, I had never seen them before in all my time in the forest. But wherever they came from, it wasn’t a place I ever wanted to see. The memory of their stark white skin, their dog-like features, and their beady red eyes haunted me. The thought of asking the Nixormans crossed my mind, but I brushed the idea away. I wasn’t allowed back, so why bother trying to contact them?

I groaned, rolling onto my unwounded side.
