Chapter Nine

Sophie couldn’t say if it was the chill in the air or in his glare that made her tremble.

She went to move away from him, suddenly and painfully aware that in her desire for warmth, she’d pressed herself against his side like a...like a...well, she didn’t want to think what she must have looked like to him.

The moment she started to scoot away, however, he took one hand off the reins and wrapped his arm around her, pulling her back into his heat. “You’re freezing,” he growled.

She felt the rumble of his voice through his chest and her heart fluttered wildly in response. She shouldn’t have mentioned the dragon comment. Truthfully, she hadn’t meant to bring it up—it was too humiliating. The way he’d talked about her and that she’d obviously been eavesdropping.

But curiosity had been stronger than embarrassment, and it had just...slipped out.

She’d wanted to see his reaction, and she had.

He was furious. Clearly. But that made his actions now all the more confusing. He was holding her. Warming her.

Heavens, he was...snuggling her.

She cast a quick glance around them, her heart hammering in her throat for reasons she could not explain. She was cold, he was warm. This was a simple exchange of heat, that was all.

Her look confirmed what she’d suspected. After the near-collision with the fox had set them off track, the other sleighs had gone on ahead so there was no sleigh behind them. Which meant, no one was watching them.

She shivered again, which had his scowl deepening. “We should get you back home to warm yourself by the fire.”

She nodded mutely. She couldn’t very well tell this man that this last shiver had definitely not been from the cold.

Oh no.

The moment he’d wrapped his arm around her and pulled her against his side, the chill had fled and was replaced by a flood of heat so strong she was certain she could feel flames nipping at her cheeks.

“Lady Sophie…” He said her name so slowly and in such a serious tone, she found herself bracing for a tirade or a criticism. Perhaps a lecture on the evils of eavesdropping.

He cleared his throat. “What you overheard…”

She bit her lip. She might scream if he didn’t finish a sentence sometime soon. His pause lasted a beat too long, and she couldn’t stop the words from flying out of her mouth. “Eavesdropping like that was inexcusable, I know. But in my defense, I truly did not intend to snoop, I was merely walking by with my sister and—”

“Lady Sophie.” He slowed the sleigh to a stop and turned to face her with that terrifyingly stern expression. “I am not angry with you for overhearing my words, I merely regret that you heard something so crass.”

“Oh.” She had no idea what else to say to that, and so she sat there staring up at him with wide eyes and her mouth still pursed in an O.

He shifted so he was facing her more fully. “I made those inexcusable statements about you and my intentions out of anger.
