He refuses to accept my apology. Instead he watches Aling Enyang pouring his coffee into the fresh cup. The old one has become too hot for his lips. If I ever thought of living again in that house, the intention has flown.

Still it is to the credit of my upbringing that I do not say any thoughts aloud to him. But I direct them at him. I blame him for all those years when we were to be seen, not heard from; and to be seen pleasant, under control and ready to perform whatever was commanded. We could be wild but not to his knowledge and never to his attention, so this transgression could be credited against Mamá. “Look what your son did! And your daughter!” Mamá accepted the blame, accepted us; tried to turn us back into good and proper children, with tears if necessary, with pleas when threats failed. In my case, as I'm sure with my brothers and sisters, Mamá ended up our accomplice. I remember nights in her room, asleep on her bed, waking up with swollen eyes in the morning but feeling saved, almost purified again.
