“What will you do now?” Alice asked him, as they stood waiting on the lawn of the police station.

“That depends on Sloane.”

“Do you want to go flying?”

“If I could fly from here back to America, I would say ‘yes.’”

“I don’t want to go back to Chicago. I don’t even want to go back to Paris.” She smoked, tapping her foot on the earth nervously. “Did you know I have two daughters?”

“No. Sloane never mentioned it.”

“They’re with my sister in Paris. They’ll be there forever. I’m just no good at that, you know?”

“Good at what?”

“Being a mother.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No. I’m happy. Though today I’m sad. And scared.”

“Scared?”

“That horrid person—the murderer—he’s still out there.”

“Unless he’s Mr. Smith.”

“No. You’ve proved he isn’t.” More smoking. “Who would kill people while they were making love?”

“Someone who disapproved.”

She dropped her cigarette onto the grass. “So what will you do now?”

He sighed. “When Sloane’s done here, I think I should go see Lady Ralls.”

“Oh, you don’t have to do that.”

“She asked to see me.”

“And so you shall. But you don’t have to go now. You can go when we all go to Clouds.”

“What do you mean?”

“Idina is having a sundowner, and everyone’s going.”

“What’s a sundowner?”

“It’s a sort of party. A good way to get blotto before dinner.”

“Alice, can you think of anyone who disliked Lord Ralls so intensely as to want to kill him?”

“Everybody loved Dickie. I loved him.”

“Someone who loved him too well, perhaps. Someone who didn’t like his sleeping with another woman?”

“Captain Green, if people here started killing each other over that, we’d all soon be dead.”
