Chapter 13

Kirsten could feel her hands shaking, the muzzle of the gun vibrating against the Asian woman’s head. The woman fell forward several times, crying into the floor, her hands cuffed behind her back. Each time, the blonde-haired woman would pull her back up.

‘Go on then. Show us you’re part of us. Dispatch this filth.’

Kirsten’s head swam. She thought about all the gruesome sights she’d seen in her time as a detective, all the violence and anger done to other people. She had never perpetrated something like this. Sure, she had been in fights, but this was just cold-blooded murder. What could she do? This was over the line, and yet she had a gun on her back. She too would be dead, and these people would just carry on. Think, Kirsten, come on. You’re the clever one. Macleod put you here for these situations. He said that you were the one, you were the one with the ability. You had the mind for this.

‘Do it!’ said the blonde-haired woman. ‘Do it now. I’ll count to three if it helps. I’ll count to three and if you haven’t done it, I’ll get my friend behind you to shoot you. If I reach five, you’re dead. One, two.’

‘Wait,’ said Kirsten.

‘There’s no waiting. Three.’

‘I said, wait. I can’t pull this trigger. It’s too risky.’

‘Go on,’ said the blonde-haired woman.

‘We’re not far away. The town’s close to us. We’re not that far out of Fort William. When I looked around, yes, I saw the barn, and I saw the house with its lights on. We’re not so far in the countryside that a shot with an unsilenced muzzle isn’t going to resonate everywhere.’

‘We’ll be out of here quickly,’ said the woman.

‘I’m not aware whose place this is. But this is your payday and you don’t want to give that away. If you really wanted to kill her, why blow her brains out with a gun with no muzzle on it? Simply take a knife, slit her throat, drop her in some other way.’

‘Good,’ said the woman. ‘You think. You just don’t want to do what you have to do under pressure. A lot of people would have just pulled that trigger, and that would have pissed me off because she would have been dead. It’s not that I care for her, but she’s merchandise. I can make money out of her. Then I would have had to kill you as well, because you would’ve stood there and said I incited you. I brought you here. I couldn’t trust that. I couldn’t trust you with that, could I? No. I’d have had to kill you as well. You’re smart, Jen. Very smart. Not afraid to call it as you see it. That’s good. That’s your first test. I’ll see you again.’

With that the blonde-haired woman walked out of the barn and Kirsten caught a view of Jock giving a big whistle.

‘My, you know how to cut it close. I thought you were a goner, Jen.
