Nick opened the throttle and let the bike scream down the empty back roads on the outskirts of Pineridge. The countryside was lush and green. The treesâevergreens, oak and ashâmajestic in their beauty. It felt good to have the wind biting at him. To feel the power of his machine beneath him.
His mind raced with thoughts of Claire, of his intense feelings for her. He struggled with how to define them, how to box them up. He enjoyed the time spent with her. He loved the way she rose to a challenge, the way she offered help without judging. She was so sweet and kind. So stubborn and closed-off. Giving and honest, yet so fragile. He wanted to protect her, to cherish her.
But he had no right to such feelings. Heâd had someone to cherish and protect once. Yet heâd failed Serena. He didnât want to put himself in a position to fail again. He didnât want to hurt Claire. It was time to move on.
The repairs to The Zone would be done in a matter of days. Claire now had people she knew were willing to help her. He admired that sheâd stepped out of her comfort level to ask for help for The Zone. All she needed was a little push and some confidence. He was gratified to think heâd had something to do with her achieving some self-assurance. Maybe that was Godâs purpose for bringing him here.
Claire would be okay now. The unruly teenagers hadnât been anywhere near The Zone as far as he could tell, but just to be on the cautious side heâd speak with Officer Bob and make sure he kept an eye on her.
Nick squelched the sting of jealousy that thought brought.
A few more days and heâd be ready to leave, to move on. Only now, heâd have not only his grief and anger to contend with, but also the ache of leaving Claire behind.
