The afternoon turned out to be a good day for the shop with high sales. Alice had also stopped in with five sets of hats, scarfs, and mittens in little kid sizes with a promise to be back with bigger kids and adult sizes next week. Holly made a mental note that they could be added to each family package, but the little kids needed new winter coats and who knew about the other three kids. She jotted down a note to try and figure out what the other kids needed. Next year sheâd be more observant with people in the town; well, more to the point, she needed to get to know her neighbors. Maybe they could help more families than just three.
âGot a minute, boss?â Marge came in the back room where Holly had been straightening things up.
âOf course. Whatâs on your mind?â Hopefully it was about how they were going to track down clothing sizes for their family members.
âThanksgiving is next week.â Margeâs smile filled her face. âWhatâs your specialty?â
Hollyâs heart sank. She thought sheâd made it clear she couldnât cook, other than feeding herself. But cooking something for a holiday was so far out of her comfort zone. âReservations?â
Her face dimmed for half a second before she beamed again. âHow are you with appetizers?â
âLike cheese and crackers?â Hope sprang eternal. She might not be at a total loss in bringing something to dinner, especially if she could get back to New York City where she could pick up something special.
âThat would be lovely and Iâm asking Gabe to bring something too. Itâs sort of a tradition that everyone brings a dish to share, kind of like the pilgrims and Indians coming together at the first Thanksgiving.â
âWhat a lovely sentiment, Marge.â Impulsively, she threw her arms around Marge. âWhat did Grammie bring?â
A wistful look crossed her face. âRolls that were lighter than air and theyâd melt in your mouth.â
A hand flew to her mouth. âI remember those. She made them all the time and they were the best.â Was that a recipe she could follow and maybe bring the rolls? Not that she was ever successful with anything involving flour or yeast, but the recipe must be at the house. âMaybe I couldâ¦â The words died on her lips. âBring appetizers.â
