Boyd Baldwin was the first man to make Natalie wake up and smell the coffee since her life had collapsed. Friends had tried to set her up on dates this last year, but she had little enthusiasm for it and trouble hiding her feelings. Boyd was different. His energy, his charisma, his enthusiasm. He was fun, enjoyable, easygoing, nice-looking. He seemed thoroughly content with his bachelor life in the small house behind his vet clinic.

Content. That was it. Boyd was content with himself and his lot in life, and it puzzled Natalie.

That evening, they were making dinner together in his kitchen. He had a killer risotto dish that he said he wanted to make for her. It was touching, to be cooked for by a man.

This little house, though, desperately needed a woman’s touch. It was over one hundred years old, full of character. Full of potential.

“I drove by this house every day,” Boyd said, “and always noticed it. One day, I saw the for sale sign out front and I knew I had to have it. I probably paid way too much for it.” He gave her a tour of each room, which only took a few minutes. “It had been a rental,” he said, a little apologetically.

Boyd told her that parts of the house had been badly remodeled and other parts hadn’t been touched. When he pushed open the door to the kitchen, she gasped. “Oh no. Someone’s DIY project has gone terribly wrong.” Doors were missing off cabinets painted pink (pink!), the floor had a visible seam running down it—separating two entirely different patterns of the linoleum vinyl flooring. It looked as if someone had run out of one flooring and hoped no one would notice if he used another pattern. The countertop was even more offensive—a bright orange laminate minus a backsplash.

“Actually, I remodeled this room myself.”

Oops.

Then he burst out laughing and she realized he was pulling her leg. Thank goodness! It was a truly horrendous kitchen . . . which only made Natalie’s brain spin with ideas.

Walking around, she imagined new cabinetry, navy blue below for a masculine look. Above would be white floating shelves. Countertops of marbled white quartz, with a gray hand-molded tile backsplash. She even knew the grout color she would add to the tile, a darker gray than the tile so it wouldn’t show stains. And along the island, she would add vintage metal stools.

Stop it, she told herself. Stop trying to change what doesn’t need to be changed. The man has not asked you for any advice. He is content! Leave him alone.

But it was so hard not to think it, not to improve it, when that was what she was experienced at doing. Helping people make a house a home was what she did best.

A Blue Jay flew to the kitchen window feeder and peered in the window, as if curious what was going on inside the house. Boyd noticed. “Did you know that seeing a Blue Jay is supposed to be a warning? It means you’re in the company of tricksters and mischief-makers.
